THEIR PERFECT camp discovered, they worked to gather more food while they had time. After leaving early that morning, Anan stalked a daggerhorn for some time and readied himself as it walked closer. He nocked his arrow as he waited for the buck to take the last steps to bring him into the perfect position. But it froze, glanced to the opposite side of the rise, and bounded from sight. He sighed in frustration and moved to see what startled the animal.

He crept closer in the hope he could still take the buck. But he knew there wasn’t much chance of that.

Anan froze. Voices?

He dropped behind cover as the sounds increased in volume. Raising his head slightly, he saw a slaver driving a Talac ahead of him. He recognized the young man as one of the herdweavers but couldn’t recall his name.

A strangled cry came from the Talac as he pitched headlong onto the ground. Anan worked frantically to come up with a plan to save the youngster without sacrificing everything and everyone else.
